Reflections on England v Croatia
A simply wonderful second half performance from England blew away Croatia 4-1 and gave new England coach Capello a wonderful start to his tenure. He made some tough decisions in selecting the team, playing Walcott for Beckham and Heskey for Defoe. He was rewarded by his players and I think this sets up three interesting questions going forward:
1. Does Cap continue to play with a target man (Heskey) and Rooney floating behind?
2. Does he work out how to keep Walcott in the side and include players like Bentley or Lennon?
3. Does he keep play one of Lamps and Gerrard alongside a holding player like Barry?
What do you think?
Are there other big decisions to be made by Cap?

dilemmas
Good summary of the pertinent issues, LM. Here are my answers:
1. Perhaps I am still scarred from Heskey’s performances before Rooney emerged, but I have been slow to come around on him. It does seem that he is carving out a very important role for himself. His unwillingness to score goals still worries me, but tactically he is a very valuable target man. I say Capello should continue to allow this partnership to flourish. The Portsmouth strikers should be the third and fourth options.
2. This for me is the easiest decision. Theo Walcott has arrived. Capello should ride this wave for as long as he can.
3. I think the most significant dilemma Capello is going to face is the Gerrard/Lampard situation. As long as he sticks with the 4-4-2 (which he should, provided that two healthy and sound striking options are available), there is not space for the both of them. When both are healthy, one should start and one should be on the bench. I lean toward Lamard at the moment, since he has emerged as a strong play making midfielder as he has matured. Gerrard is Gerrard, though, and I fully expect him to reassert himself.

another observation on point 3
If they ever get healthy, Carrick and Hargreaves are great plans B and C for the holding roll. Should Barry get hurt, I think Capello should look to them before reverting to a Lampard/Gerrard pairing.

1. Heskey? Sure he looked good and he’s had good spells before but what about poor Peter Crouch? Definitely, witn the propensity that England has to launch the ball skyward they need a target man.
2. Keep Walcott but don’t close the book on the other two.
3. It’s so ridiculously clear that Lampard isn’t good enough defensively to play in a midfield with Gerrard that I can’t imagine Capello going back to Sven and Steve’s mistake. Slot Gerrard in as option A. If he gets injured or has an extended streak of poor play then toss in Lampard. As for the holding role, IMO it’s Hargreaves or bust. Barry has done okay but he doesn’t have the experience that Owen does. Carrick is overrated.

If it ain't broke...
Generally, I’d say that there’s no reason to change something that’s working, unless if it was an obvious fluke. That match probably doesn’t fall under that category. On the specifics:
1. It’d be interesting to see Rooney working with other target men, as Heskey has the small problem of his lack of goals. He’s also getting on a bit. While I’m not a fan of Crouch (he never seems to stay up front and actually use his height), he has decent results and might be better with a more competent manager. Ashton, as little as I know about him, is also interesting.
2. Go with Walcott a couple games. If he drops a bit, choose between them based on form.
3. Seems pretty clear Gerrard/Lampard doesn’t work. IIRC, Gerrard and Barry worked well together for a couple games, before McClaren reverted back to Lampard after things fell apart in Russia. I prefer Gerrard as the first guy in that attacking role, and I can’t say I have a preference between Hargreaves, Carrick and Barry. I’m also intrigued by the idea of Hargreaves playing with either of the other two, a la Italy with Gattuso and Pirlo, even if they aren’t really at the same quality level.

copying the Italian double pivot could be interesting
the line up in that case could be:
Heskey or Crouch
Rooney – off the main striker
Walcott (good on the left as well ala Henry), Barry, Hargreaves, Gerrard (right side of midfield)
or perhaps
Heskey or Crouch
Rooney
Cole, Barry, Hargreaves, Walcott
….with that midfield maybe Stevie G plays right back!
