CAS Blow to Olympic Soccer

In an unfortunate ruling the Court of Arbitration of Sport noted that teams cannot be forced to allow their players to participate in the Olympics because it was not part of the official futbol calender noting:

"no specific decision of the Fifa executive committee establishing the obligation for the clubs to release players under 23 for this tournament".

CAS did state:

"Cas calls upon the goodwill and the good sense of Fifa and the clubs to find a reasonable solution with regard to players who wish to represent their country in the Olympic Games."

FIFA reacted with disappointment and respect:

"Fifa is surprised and disappointed by this decision, but we respect it.

"Nevertheless, I appeal to the clubs. Let your players take part in the Olympic Games. It would be an act of solidarity in perfect harmony with the Olympic spirit."

I am upset that the clubs are trying to keep under 23's from playing at the Olympics and hope that they reconsider the decision to challenge the participation of players like Messi and Diego.

What do you think?

Should clubs let their under 23 players go to the Olympics if selected?

Tough Decision

Obviously for some players it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity but it is so important for teams to get off to quick starts in their league that you can hardly blame the club that has a massive financial stake in things to keep them from playing.

Liverpool are going to be missing Lucas, Mascherano, and Babel. Those are some big holes.

The thing I don't get

Why 23? I think it should be all players that get selected. They should all get the opportunity to play for their country without having to worry about their team.

I think it’s meant to distiguish it from the World Cup and the U-20 World Cup. Basically, it’s a needless tournament but it’s kept alive because of the historical significance of the Olympic Soccer Tournament prior to the creation of the World Cup.

Plus it’s not a FIFA event. So all the rules that apply to those big competitions don’t matter.

I think by London 2012 it’ll more or less be an u-21 or U-19 tourney.

And by the way it’s not a meaningless tourney. It’s really only meaningless to the European nations. In south America, the olympic tourney is still a big deal.

It really shouldn’t be though. If FIFA ordered UEFA and South America to decide on U20 or U21 then they could get rid of the need for the Olympic tournament.
