Around SBN: Reflections on the Best Blazers Month In Forever Bar-right-arrows

Berbatov, Barry, Robinho et al

I must say that this has been an odd transfer window for me. We have seen lots of teams locked into very odd transfer situations and the costs in most instances seem to outweigh the benefits.

First, there is my club side, Spurs - who seem unable to move Berbatov along or convince him to stay at the club. If I was the director of futbol I would have put a new contract in front of him at the start of the summer and given him a month to sign. If he had not done so I would have pushed hard for a sale and been a bit creative. For instance, why on earth wouldn't Spurs try and engineer a transfer with Utd that would see Silvestre (a snip for Arsenal at 750,000 pounds) and perhaps 24 million come to the club; if Utd were not keen on such a transfer try Barca -- Dos Santos cost 8.5 million, perhaps a Berbatov for Dos Santos and 16.5 million would have worked. Getting rid of Berby early in the summer would have allowed for better planning and would have removed the uncertainty surrounding him. A sale to Chelsea, if we had moved early and had been creative could have worked -- Sidwell (5.5 mill), Ben Haim (5.5 mill ish), Beletti (4mill), Ben Sahar (5 mill) and 5 million in cash.

Instead of creativity the coach and fans are left wondering whether he will stay, go, play well, sulk, be replaced or not.

Second, Liverpool. What a disaster their handling of the Barry affair has been. Unsettle the guy, finally get permission to work out a transfer and fail to come to terms with his value -- which has been clear from the start of the summer. Again, why did they not sell a couple of fringe players quickly and free up the cash for Barry?

Then there is Robinho and Real Madrid. Their pursuit of Ronaldo unsettled him. Why not cut your losses and put together a trade. Perhaps ask Chelsea to pay 20 million pounds or so and add in Alex?

Finally there is Utd and Ronaldo -- this one looks dead but I am still shocked that Utd did not agree to a 90 million pound transfer. Berbatov, Robinho and cash for a run at Aguero in a year.....I would have made the move.

What do you guys think? Why haven't teams worked harder this summer to make some transfer moves happen?

Hard to argue with that analysis. At least you aren’t slamming the idea of buying Barry and selling Alonso without understanding the underlying reasons.

Unfortunately, MON ran his defence of Barry through the media and Villa didn’t seem to be negotiating in good faith (a deal was announced as basically done and then at the 11th hour Villa changed the terms) and of course the terrible owners didn’t help.
