Galactic Changes

I'm sure you've probably seen it by now, but the LA Galaxy has disposed of GM Alexi Lalas and, more surprisingly, coach Ruud Gullit.  Although Gullit supposedly walked away of his own accord.

Something really had to be done about the lack of quality players on the back end and Lalas was clearly to blame for this.  Gullit never appeared to be all that interested in what he was doing as an MLS coach.  The Galaxy just seems like it's a mess right now.  Watching the team's backline is like watching the Keystone Cops trying to defend the backline.  It's just a joke.

I'm wondering how much a coach can actually improve the situation on the field or are the players in back inept enough to make it a lost season.  I'm guessing that not much.  But maybe the offense can outscore opponents enough to at least make it into the playoffs.

Should be an interesting first game with Cobi Jones behind the bench.  Glad I have tickets for Thursday night's game.

The addition of Cory Gibbs should help at the back – he hasn’t played in a while, but when healthy is very good.

A looming question is whether or not the Gals can hang onto Donovan during the Jan transfer window, and if he goes what of Beckham?

I don't see Becks going anywhere

Maybe I’m naive, but I think he’s really enjoying being the focus of an entire league and sport in a country.

The team would still have Buddle. It might be best any way to try and get defenders in here any way to replace Landon. And who knows, maybe Donovan loves Cobi Jones as a head coach?

while this is not a stunning development

due to the poor results and rumors of internal strife, it is still a shock for the league. Lalas was one of the most well known MLS commodities, regularly quoted abroad etc.

I tend to agree with you that this needed to happen—surely Alexi could have recruited a couple of better defenders over the past two years.

My feeling is that the Galaxy needs to trade Landon and use the cash to bring in two quality central defenders (or one CD and a defensive midfielder).

I’m glad they have given Cobi a chance to replace Ruud.

Obviously Gullit thought it would be a paid California vacation… I think when he saw the lack of quality in the squad and realized it would be real work, he needed to bolt.

They’re a mess. Honestly, I think when this all shakes out that the person really “running” the Galaxy will be David Beckham.

They definitely need to do something and do it fast because with this upcoming season approaching so rapidly they have no time for messing around.
