How Important Is Goalkeeping in Football?
I've always loved to watch football. It's only in recent weeks though that I've taken a deep interest in football outside of what usually draws me in and that's the World Cup. UEFA was just an awesome tournament and now I can't get enough. I've been going to sleep with the Fox Soccer Channel almost every night.
I played a bit of football as a kid. I think most Americans do. But I'm certainly not an expert on the sport. I'm wondering from folks who've probably followed the sport a lot more closely for a lot longer than I have what impact goalkeepers really have in football? I've always followed hockey closely and that's what football reminds me of which is probably why've I've always been drawn to the sport. And the goalie in hockey is the most important player. A hockey goalie can single-handedly win a game.
But my impression from watching a lot of football in my time is that goalies are important in football, but because of the ginormous size of the net, what they can do is often limited. You definitely notice a difference when there is a great goalkeeper tending the net, like a Buffon or a Boruc, but it doesn't seem like the same impact position that a hockey goaltender is. I did notice that Boruc nearly single-handedly beat Austria in UEFA. But it seems like that kind of impact performance is few and far between.
I guess I'm also baffled because there seems to be so many player jerseys for sale online. Yet it's hard to find a player jersey of your favorite goalkeeper. So perhaps they just aren't the heroes for younger kids like the guys who put the ball in the net? I don't know. Maybe someone could enlighten me on this. I love the goalkeeping mentality because I grew up playing hockey goalie. I'm always immediately drawn to it.

Its a weird one…kids don’t seem to idolise goalies but that’s probably more of a result of how easy it is to idolise an outfield player with awesome skill. For a keeper to generate that kind of attention he generally needs to be a real character or really mean something to the club ie I have a Mad Jens t-shirt in honour of Jens Lehman, and David Seaman before was a legend.
On the general topic, I think a goalie is very important, even beyond the really good ones. I think one of the most underrated things about a good one is the ability to bring confidence to the backline. If, as a defender, you know that you can trust the keeper to do his job well, it allows you to get on with yours. However, if a cross comes in and the keeper shouts for it, but you know he’s crap and will probably drop it then you start second guessing yourself…multiply that by 4 and suddenly the whole defence is looking more shaky.

Good point
one of the things that I think makes Boruc so good in my eyes is that he’s super aggressive about breaking from his line and he isn’t afraid to get right in the mix of things. In hockey that’s called cutting down the angles. Boruc anticipates things really well.

Boruc
He plays like the biggest man on the pitch. Completely fearless.

I guess you don’t see as many goalie jerseys because they’re odd colors? I dunno…
Good goalkeeping is important, but the fact is that a great back 4 can make an okay keeper look great. The keeper has to do his part in positioning and knowing when to come off his line, but the fact is that the goalies with the best records are more often than not the ones who face the least amount of shots. As you said, with the size of the net there’s only so much he can do.
Casillas was a great example. He really only was asked to make one tough save in the entire knockout potion of the Euros. He’s a great keeper for sure, but the Spanish back 4(5 really with Senna) made his job pretty easy.

Casillas is a really good example
He hardly had to do anything to get Spain to the victory.

My friend bought a Roy Carroll jersey after this incident. But then, he’s a bit odd.

my sense is that a good goalkeeper is most important
at the top end of the game where top defenses ensure that a good side gives up very few chances. In those situations, a critical save from a top goalkeeper is worth the same as a moment of brilliance from a top striker.

my two cents
Having played with great keepers and rubbish keepers, I’m inclined to say that having a good keep is very important. A good, aggressive, rock solid keeper can allow the defense to play with more confidence and improve the play of the back four. Also, an underrated quality for a keeper is the willingness to take charge and set the tone for the rest of the defense. Typically this is the role of the sweeper, but the defender plays an important role in organizing the defense as well. And there are of course those games where a massive save (or 5) are every bit as important to the outcome as a great goal, cross, or tackle. Keepers tend to be unique individuals, but are an extremely important part any successful team.
