Spain 3 Russia 0

A dominant Spanish side crushed Russia 3-0 to advance to the Euro 2008 final where they will play Germany. Russia had no answer as the Spanish used a patient style and a total futbol like approach to the game to secure their win. Cesc Fabregas who came on as a sub for the injured David Villa stole the show for me but it was a wonderful all around performance. Now for Spain there is one more team in their way: Germany.

Espana

That was one of the most dominant performances I’ve seen at the tournament thus far. Spain really seems to be firing on all cyliders right now. Casilla has been a unflappable in the net, and their midfield has been in control. Germany is a strong squad, but I see Spain’s unbeaten streak remaining intact.

Also

I’m glad Xabi got some minutes in yesterday. He looked very good for the time he was out there. He often gets lost in the mix in the Spain midfield, but he’s a class player.

I was glad to see him in there… I’ll be sad to see him leave Anfield. Although Gareth Barry will soften the blow…

I almost think the Villa injury is somewhat of a blessing in disguise. It forces(probably) Aragones to play Fabregas, who changed the game when he came on, from the start.

could be

And Guiza is not a bad plan B if they need to bring on more attacking firepower in the second half.

Mea culpa: As happy as I was to see Xabi get in there, I was very skeptical of Aragones’ double sub yesterday when he brought on both Guiza and Alonso with 30 minutes left in the match. At the time they were up only by a goal, and I thought it was a bit of a risk to bring on two attacking players when they might need to kill the game off with a defenisive sub to grind out a 1-0 win. Obviously Aragones saw something to exploit, feeling that he could put the game away with another goal (or two). I guess I’m just used to watching England try and grind out 1-0 victories. The old man out-maneuvered Hiddinck, and that is an impressive feat. As much as I love England, the positive Spanish style and tactics are much more inspiring.

Alonso is a pretty solid defensive mid. Certainly moreso than Xavi in my opinion. He’ s played a holding role for Liverpool on several occasions.

yeah?

I’ve always thought of him more as a poor man’s Deco. He is a good all around player though. He’ll find a good spot somewhere if Liverpool let him go. From England’s standpoint, I’d be happy if Gerrard and Barry learn how to play well together at Liverpool.
