Fascinating Analysis Of The England's Central Midfield Problem
"..can Fabio Capello really jettison a player who thinks he has played in his best position only five times for his country? Or can he finally master the pair both playing in the same team without sacrificing their attacking qualities?"

This analysis bears out my impression: that Gerrard and Lampard step on each other’s toes and are unable or unwilling to advance in the opposing team’s side when playing together.
Against Khazakstan the 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 or whatever it was with Gerrard on this left didn’t work very well. The 4-4-2 with SWP on the left and Lampard and Gerrard in the middle worked a little better. Personally, when Joe Cole gets healthy I think the best option is a 4-5-1 with Barry/Hargreaves/Carrick holding, for that is the formation in which Lampard has excelled this year with Chelsea. However, with Heskey in fine form at the moment, perhaps not. Then we are back square one.
